Course Overview

Fire is one of the few hazards that can simultaneously threaten every person in a data center and the mission it supports. Data centers use specialized detection and suppression systems designed to protect electronic equipment, and increasingly house large lithium-ion battery plants whose fire behavior differs fundamentally from a conventional fire. This course covers fire prevention, portable extinguisher use, the systems that protect your facility, battery-specific fire hazards, and your role in the facility's Emergency Action Plan.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Explain the fire triangle and how data center fire prevention addresses each element.
2. Identify and correctly use a portable fire extinguisher, including which class applies to which fire.
3. Describe how clean-agent gaseous suppression and pre-action sprinkler systems function and what to do when they activate.
4. Explain the specific fire hazards of VRLA and lithium-ion battery rooms, including thermal runaway.
5. Describe the required elements of an Emergency Action Plan and your role during an evacuation.

Who Must Take This Course

All data center personnel must complete this course, since fire and evacuation procedures apply facility-wide. Employees designated to use portable fire extinguishers or to perform specific emergency duties (shutdown, evacuation assistance) require additional role-specific training beyond this course.
